How do you pronounce Content?

Pronunciation is the way of delivering a word. English is a very mischievous language. It may have varied meanings for a single word. If used correctly, it may give a good impression and helps to have a better command over the language. If used incorrectly, it may lead to absurd communication. People generally use the different pronunciations interchangeably without looking at a wider picture. Let’s have a look at one of the examples; the example has been taken for the word “Content”

The word “Content” has two different pronunciations.

In one way, ‘content’ could be pronounced as (kənˈtɛnt) and in the other way the word can be pronounced as (ˈkɒntɛnt). Both these pronunciations are different in spite of the same word and spelling. Thus, in writing it might bring confusion sometimes. If you are able to understand the meanings of different pronunciations then you will easily figure out its usage in writing as well as speaking.

In the first pronunciation Content (kənˈtɛnt) means satisfied, pleased, happy, cheerful, gratified, tranquil and so on. Someone makes use of this word in a positive and comfortable state of mind. Example: “I am content with this life”, this means that person speaking the sentence is happy with the life and has a jolly inner health. He/she doesn’t crave for more and more. Rather, is happy with whatever he possesses.

In the second pronunciation Content (ˈkɒntɛnt) means quantity, amount, proportion, subject, matter, index, elements etc. This could be used while defining everything that is contained in something. For instance, books have an index (or content) page which tells the content of the whole book.  This could also be used for telling the constituents/ingredients (content) of a food recipe.
Thus both the pronunciations have altogether different meanings. In no way, we can use them interchangeably. English classes seem to be really helpful for those who are working on improving or learning English.
